What should I do if I become a permanent resident of South Australia?

If your overseas licence expires while you are in Australia, you must obtain an Australian driver's licence to continue driving.

Does my international driving permit (IDP) need to match my driver's licence?

Your international driving permit (IDP) must be issued by the same country that issued your driver's licence. The permit verifies in several languages that you have a valid driver's licence.

Do I need an international driving permit (IDP) to rent a car?

You may need an IDP to rent a car, depending on the rental company’s requirements.

How long is an international driving permit (IDP) valid?

An IDP is valid for 12 months, and you must also carry your driver's licence from your home country while driving.

What do the condition codes on my South Australian driver’s licence mean?

If your licence has a condition, one of the following codes will be printed on the front of your photo licence card:

• A - Automatic vehicle
• B - Synchromesh transmission
• I - Alcohol interlock device
• S - Corrective lenses (if you have advised that you are required to wear glasses while driving)
• T - Automatic truck/bus
• V - Modified vehicle
• X - Miscellaneous (further information will be printed on the reverse side of your photo licence card)
• Y - Court restriction
• Z - No alcohol

What are the requirements for holding a learner's permit in South Australia?

If you hold a learner's permit in South Australia, you must:

• Display 'L' plates.
• Carry your learner's permit card or digital permit at all times and show it to a police officer if asked.
• Not exceed the speed limit by 10 km/h or more.
• Not exceed the 100 km/h speed limit at any time.
• Not accumulate 4 or more demerit points during the learner's permit period.
• Not use any function of a mobile phone while driving. However, certain mobile phone uses are allowed when the vehicle is stationary in a road-related area, including:
• Making electronic payments at a drive-through or car park.
• Using QR codes or vouchers for similar purposes.
• Showing identification, such as a digital driver’s licence, when required.
• Not drive with any concentration of alcohol or illegal substances in your blood.

Are there additional restrictions for P1 drivers under 25 years of age?

Yes, if you are under 25 years old and on your P1 licence, you must:

• Not drive between midnight and 5 am.
• Not drive with more than one passenger aged 16 to 20 years (excluding immediate family members) unless a Qualified Supervising Driver is seated next to you, or you meet the exemption criteria.
• Not drive a high-powered vehicle unless you have a certificate of exemption from high-powered vehicle restrictions.

What happens after completing 12 months on a P1 licence?

After completing the first 12 months on your P1 licence, you will spend the next 2 years on your P2 licence. You do not need to apply for your P2 licence, as the start date will be printed on the front of your provisional licence card.

How do P2 licence conditions differ from P1 licence conditions?

P2 licence conditions are similar to P1 licence conditions, with the following exceptions:

• You do not need to display 'P' plates.
• You can use certain mobile phone functions, such as hands-free and Bluetooth technology.
• You can use a mobile phone for specific purposes while the vehicle is stationary in a road-related area, including:
• Making electronic payments at a drive-through or car park.
• Using QR codes or vouchers for similar purposes.
• Showing identification, such as a digital driver’s licence, when required.

Are there any restrictions for P2 drivers under 25 years of age?

If you are under 25 and on a P2 licence, you can now:

• Drive between midnight and 5 am.
• Drive with more than one passenger aged 16 to 20 years.

What are alcohol interlock conditions for a licence in South Australia?

If you are applying for a licence following a court disqualification due to a serious drink driving offence, your licence will be issued with mandatory alcohol interlock conditions. An "I" condition will be printed on the front of your licence card.

What must I do if my licence has alcohol interlock conditions?

If your licence is subject to alcohol interlock conditions, you must:

• Display 'P' plates during the period the alcohol interlock device is required.
• Maintain a zero blood alcohol content.
• Not incur 2 or more demerit points.
• Carry your licence card or digital licence at all times and show it to a police officer if asked.
• Only drive the vehicle you have nominated to have the alcohol interlock device installed.
• Not drive the nominated vehicle unless it is fitted with a properly functioning alcohol interlock device installed by an approved alcohol interlock provider.
• Not interfere with the alcohol interlock device or allow it to be interfered with.
• Carry a certificate issued by the interlock provider certifying that the alcohol interlock device was properly functioning during its last examination.
• Produce the certificate to a police officer if required.
• Present the nominated vehicle for examination by an approved alcohol interlock provider when requested.

How are demerit points determined for driving offences in South Australia?

The number of demerit points incurred depends on the type of offence and its likelihood of causing an accident. Below is a summary of common offences and their associated demerit points.

What is a U class licence in South Australia?

Starting from 1 December 2024, a U class licence is required to drive an ultra high powered vehicle (UHPV) in South Australia.

What vehicles are classified as ultra high powered vehicles (UHPVs)?

UHPVs are vehicles, excluding buses, motorbikes, and motor trikes, with a gross vehicle mass up to 4.5 tonnes and a power-to-weight ratio of 276 kilowatts per tonne or more. This category includes certain 'supercars' and 'hypercars'. Drivers are responsible for determining if their vehicle is classified as a UHPV.

What are the eligibility requirements for obtaining a U class licence?

To be eligible for a U class licence, you must hold a full or probationary C (Car) licence.
